Reccomended Flights To/From Iceland (AEY/MSP)
Reccomended Flights To/From Iceland (AEY/MSP)
There are a few fun considerations when booking travel to Iceland. We know that some of you will add extra time on Reykjavik on the front or back end of your adventure, and some of you will fly straight to Reykjavik and then to Akureyri on Saturday.
We will send a digital survey to collect your travel plans closer to the vacation.
There are TWO flights to get to Akureyri, North Iceland.
1. From YOUR HOME AIRPORT to Keflavik International KEF (close to Reykjavik)
2. Next a 40-minute flight from Reykjavik RKV to Akureyri AEY (this smaller flight is from a different airport)*
1. All of you will take an international flight to Keflavik (KEF) International
If you are NOT adding extra days on the front or back end, you should use Icelandair to ensure timing that works and gets you to Iceland early enough to Reykjavik to transfer airports for the short flight to Akureyri. *Minneapolis is a HUB for Icelandair so look forward to the inexpensive direct round trips ($700-$1000)*
If you are adding extra days on the front or back, there may be even more Airline options since your arrival time to Keflavik KEF will have no constraints.
2. The smaller flight to/from Reykjavik Domestic (RKV) Airport to Akureyri
will be booked at Icelandair (even if your bigger flight is on another airline)
For these smaller flights, please book the flight on your first Saturday arriving between 11:30 - 2 pm (different months have different arrival times)
This is when your hosts will be arranging a group pick-up and when your housing will become available.
Please do not book an earlier arrival unless you have personal plans and can manage your luggage until a group pick up at the airport or Hotel KEA around 12:30pm
If you need to be on a LATER flight due to coming from another country or other reason, we can arrange pick up for the 5pm arrival when necessary. (If you are driving or have personal plans in Akureyri before the retreat, we’ll coordinate with you directly.)
RETURNING TO REYKJAVIK ON THE LAST SATURDAY:
Please book your morning departure between 9:20 am and 10:45 am from Akureyri AEY to Reykjavik RKV domestic airport.
This is especially necessary if you are leaving the country later that same day from the International Airport - Most flights (Iceland Air is recommended) leave between 4:30 and 6pm and you need 3 ½ - 4 hours minimum to transfer airports and check in for the bigger flight.
Do not book a flight that leaves KEF before 2/3pm.
Please do not book a later flight unless necessary - you will still be required to check out of your apartments and will be on your own until that flight departs.
Not Included - Transfers between international (RKV) airport and domestic (KEF) airports:
Whether arriving early or transferring to the smaller airport, you can take
Keflavik to the city center (or domestic airport) is about 45-60 minutes.
*If you have 3-4 people arriving at the same time, a Taxi is more direct*
If you are staying in Reykjavik before the retreat, this smaller airport is close to the city, so an easy 10-15 minute taxi can be arranged from your hotel on the start day of the retreat.
Flybus (https://www.re.is/tour/flybus/) to your next stop. The flybus can be purchased in advance for around $35-40.
If you arrive on the morning of the start date of your retreat and then need to transfer to the smaller domestic airport, please ensure you have at least 3.5 - 4 hours between your arrival to Keflavik and your flight to Akureyri. This is to ensure you have plenty of time to make it through passport control, luggage etc.
PLEASE NOTE - Let's make this easier ~ We will be offering transfer options between the international & domestic airports with excursions:
Pick up at the airport, luggage is safely stored on the bus, easy-peasy transfers! *Price to be announced in June 2025 once arranged.*
The Blue Lagoon upon arrival to Iceland on 9/20/25 (flight to KEF must arrive by 6:45 am ~ this is your layover before departing RKV for AEY)
2023 cost was $135* (included transfer bus between airports, luggage storage on bus, and Blue Lagoon admission)
2-hour downtown Reykjavik stop on 9/27/25 (flight leaving AEY is at 9:20 am to be part of this transport/excursion, international flight departing after 4:30 pm)
2023 cost was $45* (included transfer bus between airports, luggage storage, and 2 hours to freely roam downtown Reykjavik )
a PASSPORT is required for travel to Iceland. Please note that your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the period of your intended stay.
Getting to Akureyri (from MSP) - Try Booking:
Icelandair Flights FI656 & FI40 (pictured below)
Depart MSP on FRIDAY (9/19/25) 7:25p to arrive AEY on SATURDAY 12:50p
**Goal is to arrive in KEF airport around 6:30a (layover time used for Blue Lagoon while transferring to RKV airport)
**this booking arrives in Akureyri correctly between 11:30a-2p on Saturday**
5 hour layover can be used to see Blue Lagoon as an optional group activity) *pricing to be announced!*
Understanding the Price differences
1. Economy Light - Carry On Only - assigned seat day of flight - no ticket changes
2. Economy Standard - Checked Bag + Carry On bag - pick your seat - ticket changes for a fee if needed
3. Economy Flex - Checked Bag + Carry On bag - pick your seat (more choices) - ticket changes free + airfare refund
I have flown all options - know your baggage preference and the ticket changes for a fee is nice.
**NOTE: we have had attendees need flight changes in the past (MAKE SURE YOU BOOK TO DEPART FOR AEY on FRIDAY 9/19/25 to avoid past errors and additional fees!) Attendees get stuck on 9/20 as start of the adventure but you fly overnight and arrive at 6:30a Saturday morning.
Getting Home (if MSP) - Try Booking:
Iceland Air Flights FI31 & FI657 (pictured below)
Depart AEY Saturday 9:20a arrive MSP Saturday 6:10p
**this booking correctly departs Akureyri between 9:20a-10:45a on Saturday**
The reason behind 9:20a departure vs. 1:20p AEY departure is 6hr layover vs 2 ½hr layover. The layover needs appx 3-4 hours to move you between RKV & KEF airport - especially if you are checking baggage.
6+ hour layover can be used to see Downtown Reykjavik as an optional group activity *pricing to be announced!*
*flight pricing shown as of 10/6/24 at 8:30a*
